Common Cooking Conversions and abbreviations

Here are some common abbreviations used in cooking.

Measurements:
t = tsp. = teaspoon
T = Tbs. = Tablespoon
c = cup
pkg = package
fl = fluid
oz = ounce
pt = pint (16 oz)
qt = quart (32 oz)
gal = gallon (128 oz)

Some equivalent measurements:

1 lemon = 1 to 1 1/2 tsp of grated zest
juice of 1 orange = about 1/2 cup
3 tsp = 1 Tbs
fluid oz. = 2 Tbs. or 6 tsp.
1 cup = 8 oz.

Metric Conversions:
wet
5 ml = 1 tsp
15 ml = 1 Tbs
30 ml. = 1 oz
 240 ml = 1 cup
dry
100 grams = 3.5 oz

Fresh Herb to Dry Herb conversion:

It's pretty straightforward to convert between dried and fresh herb measurements. The rule is: 1 part dried herb is equal to 3 parts fresh herbs. For example, a recipe that calls for a tablespoon (15 ml) of fresh oregano could be prepared using only a teaspoon (5 ml) of dried oregano.
